- Linguisticsa mark ( ´ ) placed over a vowel, esp. to show that the vowel is close or tense, as in French é, or long, as in Hungarian, or that the vowel or the syllable it is in bears the word stress, as in Spanish, or is pronounced with raised pitch, as in Classical Greek.
